The Nobleman’s Son Healed
Returning to Galilee, where “a prophet hath no honour in his own country,” Jesus is met at Cana by a royal official from Capernaum begging him to heal his dying son. Jesus heals at a distance, by word alone — and the father believes before he has any sign that the word was kept.

43Now after two days, he departed from there and went into Galilee, 44for Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45Then when he had come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things which he had done at Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went unto the feast.
46So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47When he heard Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him and implored him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48Then said Jesus unto him, Except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe. 49The nobleman said unto him, Sir, come down before my child die. 50Jesus said unto him, Go your way, your son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus had spoken unto him and he went his way. 51And as he was now going down to his house, his servants met him and spoke, saying, Your son lives. 52Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him. 53So the father knew that his son was healed at the same hour in which Jesus said unto him, Your son lives. And he believed, and his whole house, 54this being the second miracle which Jesus had done when he had come out of Judea into Galilee.
4344Jesus stayed two days with them teaching, worshipping, and having them baptized before he departed to return to Galilee. On the way home Jesus repeated the parable: A prophet is never honored in his home town. 45But when he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans were excited to see him because many of them had been at Jerusalem during the Passover and told the others about the miracles he did there.
46Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he earlier had turned water into wine. There was a wealthy and respected man there whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he traveled to Galilee to beg him to come to his home at Capernaum and heal his son because the young man was near death. 48Jesus responded to him, Like other Jews who seek signs, you want me to physically travel to him and put on a display, but all that is necessary is for you to have faith in the power to heal. 49But the father begged, Sir, please come to my house so that my child does not die. 50Jesus replied, Go to your home without me, for your son will recover and live — I have faith this will happen even if you do not. And the man wanted to believe what Jesus said, and trusting it may be possible, he left to return home. 51While he traveled back to his house, his servants were hurrying to meet him, and said, Your son has recovered and is not going to die! 52The father asked them when his recovery began. The servants told him it was the day before, just after midday. 53The father knew this had been the very moment when Jesus spoke the words that his son would recover and live, and he realized Jesus was a messenger of God. And his entire family likewise shared this belief in Jesus. 54This was the second miracle Jesus performed when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
- The nobleman asks Jesus to “come down,” but Jesus sends him home with only a word. What would it cost you to act on a promise before you have any evidence it was kept — as this father does, walking home the whole day not yet knowing?
- “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” is spoken to the very man about to receive one. Is Jesus refusing him, testing him, or simply naming the condition he is about to outgrow?
- The father “believed, and his whole house” — the healing becomes a household’s faith, not just a father’s relief. How does one person’s answered prayer become a family’s conversion?
