The Samaritan Village Refuses Him
The last journey begins. He sets his face toward Jerusalem, and the first village on the road will not have him, because he is going there. When two of his own ask for fire from heaven, he rebukes them instead.
Note. The Joseph Smith Translation names who refused him (the Samaritans, not an unnamed “they”) and supplies what James and John saw before they asked for fire: that the village would not receive him.
? How to read this edition
The reading is the Joseph Smith Translation, in the text of the Covenant Christian Edition, carried beside each Gospel and set against the King James baseline. Headers give both numbering systems: the CCE chapter and verse, and the traditional KJV reference.
51And it came to pass, when the time had come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52and sent messengers before his face, and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him. 53And they did not the Samaritans would not receive him because his face was turned as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54And when his disciples James and John saw this that they would not receive him, they said, Lord, do you desire that we command fire to come down from Heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did? 55But he turned and rebuked them and said, You know not what manner of spirit you are of, 56for the Son of Man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
