Third Passion Prediction; the Sons of Zebedee

He takes the twelve aside and tells them plainly: betrayed, condemned, mocked, scourged, killed, and raised on the third day. Their answer is a request about seating, and the other ten are furious, and none of them understood a word of it.

Note. The Joseph Smith Translation reverses the clause about the seats in both Matthew and Mark: the places are not withheld, they are already prepared, and that is why they are not his to hand out.

? How to read this edition

The reading is the Joseph Smith Translation, in the text of the Covenant Christian Edition, carried beside each Gospel and set against the King James baseline. Headers give both numbering systems: the CCE chapter and verse, and the traditional KJV reference.

JST
Green: Joseph Smith Translation. Where the Covenant Christian Edition departs in substance from the King James text and the change is in the JST (confirmed against the parallel-column edition). Modernized English (“has” for “hath,” “you” for “thou”) is not marked.
CCE
Burgundy: Covenant Christian Edition. Where the CCE’s reading departs from the King James but the change is not in the Joseph Smith Translation manuscript (e.g. “this day I have begotten you” at the baptism). Some are Joseph’s own readings from his sermons; the section’s Joseph Smith commentary then gives the sermon.
MatthewKJVMatthew 20:17–28CCEMatthew 10:1–3NT 1NT 2

17And Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart in the way and said unto them, 18Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, 19and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him. And the third day, he shall rise again.

20Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children, with her sons, worshipping him Jesus, and desiring a certain thing of him. 21And he said unto her, What do you desire that I should do? And she said unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on your right hand and the other on the left, in your kingdom. 22But Jesus answered and said, You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of? And to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 23And he said unto them, You shall drink indeed of my cup and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with. But to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. is for whom it is prepared of my Father, but not mine to give.

24And when the ten heard it this, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. 25But Jesus called them unto him and said, You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26But it shall not be so among you. But whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister. 27And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant, 28even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life, a ransom for many.

MarkKJVMark 10:32–45CCEMark 5:25–28NT 2

32And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them, and they were amazed.

And as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him. 33And Jesus said, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes. And they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles. 34And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and the third day, he shall rise again.

35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came unto him, saying, Master, we wish that you should do for us whatever we shall desire. 36And he said unto them, What do you desire that I should do unto you? 37They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit one on your right hand and the other on your left hand in your glory. 38But Jesus said unto them, you know not what you ask. Can you drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of, and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with. 40But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them they shall receive it for whom it is prepared.

41And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. 42But Jesus called them to him, and saith and said unto them, You know that they which are accounted who are appointed to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 43But it shall not be so among you. But whoever will be great among you shall be your minister, 44and whoever of you will be the chiefest shall be servant of all. 45For even the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

LukeKJVLuke 18:31–34CCELuke 11:1NT 2

31Then he took unto him the twelve and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man shall be accomplished, 32for he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully treated, and spit on; 33and they shall scourge him, and put and put him to death, and the third day he shall rise again. 34And they understood none of these things, and this saying was hidden from them, neither knew remembered they the things which were spoken.
